Review of “Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah”
by Eleyda Negrón
Earlier this year, World Dance StateplaceNew York launched a new Tribal Fusion instructional DVD. “Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning with Ariellah” is approximately 150 minutes long with four main sections:
 Yoga conditioning
 Belly dance technique drills
 Belly dance combinations
 Performances
This particular DVD was an obvious success within the Goth community, but it is also very appealing to the Tribal Fusion belly dancer and people interested in yoga as their main exercise method.
The yoga sections are specially designed to help with the different areas in belly dancing, though it is long enough to be practiced as a daily yoga routine. These yoga exercises target the lower body and hips, as well as the upper torso to increase back flexibility. Many of the moves also enhance core strength. It offers a wide variety in difficulty levels, many of them easy enough for the novice trainee to follow, yet challenging for the regular yoga student.
The drills are divided between basic and advanced drills for hips, upper body, arms and combinations - for those who want to perfect their “layering” technique as well as level changing. The drills are explained fully, with very useful hints for the student.
“Contemporary Belly Dance” also offers a choreography session to be practiced to two different songs. This choreography is the result of the combinations included in the technique drills section. The flexibility of practicing to two different melodies helps to increase creativity and brings a fun intriguing twist.
After all that exercise, there is nothing better than to take a seat and relax while Ariellah performs at the end of the DVD. Her performances are immaculate, and probably my favorite ones.
If you ever had classes or workshops with Ariellah, you will not be disappointed. It stills provide variety, even if it is very close to what she uses to teach in her classes. Many of her students simply call this DVD “Ariellah-in-a-box” for this reason. For the new student you will like her style: clear, precise, and well explained.
As a personal preference, I would consider a a brighter background or clothing in full contrast with the background, to enhance small movements and highlight details. Illumination and their lighter background at the excercise section compensates most of the time, as well as Ariellah's explanations and guidance with hands. Despite that small detail, “Contemporary Belly Dance and Yoga Conditioning” is an outstanding drilling companion at home, and provides an excellent source for creativity.
