Darkly Fashionable with Tombo Studio
by Eleyda Negrón
Tombo is the Japanese word for dragonfly, and also the name of Tombo Studio, a traveling boutique owned by Gothic Belly dancer Anaar, which was established in 1995. Her designs, that she describes as inspiration of the romantic yet dangerous aspects of “The Goddess”, embrace different style influences that remind one of the far away times of the Belle Époque, the Victorian styles of the Pre-Raphaelites, and the sensuality of the Femme Fatale.
Anaar, who has a Bachelors degree in Fashion Arts, and a Masters in Arts as well, has years of experience with fabrics and beads. She works with high quality fabrics including the Egyptian Assuit. Known as Tulle-bi-telli, Asyut, Assyut, Assiut, and other variations, Assuit is a wonderful cotton textile with small strips of metal creating designs. She also works with other textiles, such as velvets, netting, silks, brocade, organza and chiffon.
She also includes unusual materials in her designs, in particular using hair in her belts. Even though she has some pieces with synthetic hair, she has several pieces made of natural hair, material that she prefers. Synthetic hair is lighter in weight, and depending on the quality might be mistaken for real hair; real hair is heavier in weight yet softer to work with, lasts longer and feels real, making the piece higher in quality. Hair gives a great snap, and even if it is shorter than a flying skirt, it gives that “flying” sensation with an ethereal look.
The designs exposed in her Tombo Studio Website are 100% handmade, and include belts, skirts, and bustles. Bustles originated in the nineteenth century and were worn under the skirt to enhance it and keep it from dragging, and in the late 1860s became an accessory over the skirt. Anaar's bustles have changed with time and now, thanks to the influence of designer and belly dancer Tempest, adapted to the Goth community fashion. Anaar has several ornaments and clothing just in Assuit fabric, including bras, pantaloons, gauntlets, and face veils.
Part of her impressive collection is her hand made tikas or headpieces. This particular headpiece gets its name from the religious concept of tika, a mark used on the forehead to represent a commitment to a spiritual idea. Tikas, therefore, will always have a very delicate piece to be worn on your forehead. Many of the crystals are vintage; and the selection to choose from includes peridot, garnet, jet, amethyst, clear and champagne.
She also has an exquisite collection of jewelry that has been collected by her and is available for sale. These pieces, a collection that has been acquired over ten years, includes silver, high carat gold and beaded items originating from all over the world.
Small sizes can be found, and she also modifies with great style pieces to fit us, Goddess sized dancers. Due to the high quality and craftsmanship on her work, the prices go accordingly. Even so, if your budget is tight, fear no more. Anaar will be more than happy to work with you, so that you can have your unique piece from a great designer at a mutually convenient price.
If you live in the Bay Area in California, you can make an appointment to visit her studio. Otherwise, contact by email is also acceptable, or you might be lucky enough to find her traveling to a venue close to you.
